everything can be related to star wars. even for a 4 year old.

I was driving Nile to LeMars to meet my parents today.  He will be staying with them all week while we are in the hospital with Adeline.  I was telling him that it was time for the doctors to make Adeline's head a circle.  He asked if Dr. Schneider (my OBGYN) was going to be there, and I said no.  So he asked what Adeline's doctors names were.  I said, "Well, one of them is Dr. Miller."  He became excited, "Really? That's Obi-Wan Kenobi's middle name!" I said, "Really? He's Obi-Wan Kenobi Miller?" "Yep!", he said.  "Who's the other doctor?" I said, "Dr. Puccioni."  And of course, he became even more excited and replied, "NO WAY! That's R2D2's middle name! R2D2 Pusoni!"  Thank you, daddy, for making my son a Star Wars geek.

form and function

Aaron and I have been trying to get Nile to turn his underwear around all day...he put it on backwards this morning. He finally set us straight, "As long as my penis is in the front, it doesn't really matter". So I guess he's right, again.

the true meaning of Christmas

Nile can't wait to open the Christmas cards that we get in the mail each day...but today he threw the last one on the coffee table and said, 'Geez, everybody's forgettin' to put dollars in them!'

his definition of craniosynostosis

I decided to get a feel for how Nile was doing with his sister's diagnosis.  He hasn't shown many signs of being affected by it.  He is starved for attention at times, but that has been the case since Adeline was born. It seems he is constantly touching or kissing her head, but I guess I am too.  And there has been a few occasions (even many months ago) where he will randomly tell someone, "There's nothing wrong with her head.  It's just fine.  It will fix all by itself." So I vaguely told him that Adeline's doctors are going to fix her head.  He barely looked up from his Leapster and said, "I know, her head's an oval and it's sposed to be a circle."  And that was it.  Plain and simple.  I couldn't have explained it better myself.

lookin' out for little sis

Nile told me that Adeline needed to play somewhere else tonight. He didn't want her to hear the naughty words his trains were saying as he was playing with them. So comforting to know that he's always looking out for her.

economics

Nile is very concerned that Aaron and I are both at home today. "But if you both aren't working today who's making the money?" Glad he appreciates quality family time.

paparazzi

A camera seemed like such a fun gift for Nile...until I saw the pics of the laundry on the couch, me feeding the baby and daddy getting dressed.  I knew there was trouble when I heard Aaron say, "Buddy, let me get some pants on first"!

nile kinnick is soooo cool

Nile finally understands just how cool his namesake, Nile Kinnick, is. Aunt JuJu gave him a Hawkeye football uniform.  I ironed the number 24 on the back.  Everyday, as soon as we get in the door after work, he runs to his bedroom, throws the unform on, turns on the T.V. and watches the 1990 Iowa vs Michigan football game that Aaron recorded from College Football Classics.  And he yells and cheers for about 15 minutes.  (And then he changes into a basketball "uniform" and "shoots some hoops".  When he's done with that he changes into pajamas. At least 2 different mix-matched pairs.  He's a kid of many "talents". And I get to clean it all up every evening.)

teacher crush

"When I'm at school and I go poop Mrs. Hartnet wipes my butt. But I wish Mrs. Heaton would. Maybe next time. Maybe next time".

learning about diversity

I was baking Adeline's baptismal cake today and he wanted to know if it was going to be African American or Causcasian.  Because African American is his favorite flavor.  He has been very curious about different races lately, and I guess he's been paying attention.  I'd better straighten a few things up though.

Roll Call

I spent the morning at Nile's preschool - just hanging out.  I feel out of touch because I don't drop him off or pick him up, so I thought I'd make up some time.  They were in "circle time" and the teacher was about to start roll-call.  I noticed Nile "zipped" his lips and sat on his hands.  The teacher sat on a chair in front of all of the students and had a stack of white cardboard rectangles in her lap.  I could see Nile get excited.  She held up the first white rectangle and it had the name "Hannah" written across it in big black letters.  I looked over to see Nile, biting both lips, hands under his bottom, practically throwing his body towards a quiet little girl behind him.  He kept moving his upper half as if he was pointing to her with his head, and mumbled "Hannah through his closed lips.  Finally, "Hannah" barely spoke up and read her name. Nile relaxed.  Next it was Elle.  Same thing.  No one said a word, but Nile gestured toward a cute little blond girl beside him.  He could barely contain himself.  She wasn't speaking up.  Finally he said, "Elle, that's your name. E-L-L-E.  You're here!" And this went on and on, until all of the names were called.  But if the child didn't make it to school that day, Nile would tell the teacher that he or she wasn't there.
After circle time was over the teacher came over to talk to me.  She told me that after just a couple of days of roll call, Nile would shout out every kid's name before they even had a chance.  So she explained to him that the other kids needed to learn their own names. So she had him zip his lips.  Then he started pointing.  So the kids would just wait for him to point at them to know when there name was up.  So she had him sit on both hands.  But, obviously, that wasn't going to stop him from "helping" his classmates.

first day of preschool

Me: "Nile, what was was your favorite part of preschool?"
Nile: "EVERYTHING!"
Me: "What was your least favorite part?"
Nile: "Snack time, cause I just wanted to play and sing songs and stuff."

"Mom, make it so they talk with those other words." You know a kid's bored when he wants to watch his Thomas movie in Spanish.

growing up

I think Nile may be transitioning from Thomas to Star Wars. Gordon the train has a lightsaber and the Jedi just ran "as fast as his pistons could pump!".

a little spill

‎'momma...I dripped just a tiny lil bit of your nail polish on the living room floor. What are you going to say to me when you see it?' Ummm...it was the whole bottle. And now I'm covered in it.

And then he always analyzes the problem.  "I'm sorry.  It was a mistake.  It was my fault. But I didn't mean to...Right?"

pick up line for mom?

And to the very helpful (and not too bad-looking) male associate at Target tonight, Nile says, "Thank you for helping us find the batteries, but you can't go home with my mom tonight".

clarifying his baby sister's name

"Her name is Adeline. It's defnitey not Bob Roe's or Wally." -Nile setting the record straight during prayers tonight. He had really wanted us to name her Bob Roe's.

ear-lashes

Nile told Aaron "i like your ear-lashes daddy". Time to raise my husband's self-confidence... and buy a trimmer.

watching his weight

I'm slightly embarrassed that my 3 year old son insisted on taking his shoes off before stepping on the scale at the doctor today.

learning the alphabet

I started to panic when I couldn't find Nile at Sam's Club today.  When I finally spotted him, and was about to chew him out, he stopped me with his excitement.  "Look Mom!  There's a T and an A and an M and a P and anoder A and an X!  Isn't that soooooo coool?!  And there's eighty-eight of them!  See mom? An 8 and anoder 8!"

don't get too attached

Nile is very excited to take care of his first fish. But when you ask what their names are he says "they don't have names, they're just fish!" and rolls his eyes. So they will be known as "orange fish with the white stripe" and "black fish that sticks to the wall".
